Changing Culture

Hope teensImagine this...
You’re 16, an orphan, homeless and living on the streets in one of the poorest countries in Eastern Europe.

When the call came from Moldova to help these kids, Hope Bible Institute in rural Moldova responded and has become an oasis of Christian compassion, care and training for 36 at-risk Moldovan teens. There the Bible is taught, life skills are developed and all students are mentored in a trade. However, Hope’s small library is totally inadequate. So, READ has made a commitment to provide $3,000 to this ministry for much needed text books and other resources to assist in the evangelism and discipleship of these hungry-for-hope Moldovan teens.

How else is READ helping?

A-Special-Gift-for-ChristmasAnother call came from Pastor Viktor, one of READ's ministry partners, asking for help to respond to the request of the Department of Education for the Dnipro region in Ukraine to place copies of “The Camel Story – A Trilogy” in each elementary classroom in the region. You can do the math - 5,000 classrooms where the story of Jesus birth, death and resurrection is wanted and welcomed by public school officials in southern Ukraine! Wow!

A gift of $10.00 will allow this trilogy of books of the Gospel to be placed in an elementary public school classroom in Ukraine.

Opening Doors for People with Special Needs

special-needsVery few of the churches in the former Soviet Union are handicap accessible. There are no ramps, expanded isles, bathrooms or openings for wheelchairs. This area of the world is just beginning to understand that a person with a handicap has value. READ is on the front lines of this cultural change.

Board member, Oksana Elsinger, has a child with a handicap and is from Ukraine. She has been a valuable part of READs expansion into this important area.

David Anderson wrote a book called “Reaching out and Bringing In – Ministry to and with Persons with Disabilities” teaching the church how to open their arms to people and children with handicaps. READ now provides a copy of this book to all conference attendees and others in Ukrainian and Russian languages.
